And after a day in the fresh air, there's nothing better than coming home to a warm, luxurious, and comfortable house with a sauna and a crackling fire. Skiing

On the long slats

The Pillows & Pines Lodge is located in the Hochkönig ski area, named after the mighty 3,000-meter-high Hochkönig massif. The ski area offers 120km of slopes for skiers of all levels, top-notch snow and fun parks, and of course, a variety of cozy ski huts where you can relax and enjoy the magical views.

The area is ideal for families who enjoy a combination of quiet and spacious slopes, unspoiled nature, and adventure. The area is also known as the "Schneeloch" (Snow Choir) because it often receives abundant snow, especially in Mühlbach.

The nearest ski lift (Karbachalmbahn) is just a 5-minute drive from the chalet or a short ride on the (free) ski bus, which stops a 5-minute walk from the chalet.

Near the chalet is also a smaller ski area: Hochkeil (10-minute drive from the chalet or 20 minutes by ski bus). This area is great for children and beginners, but it also has several red runs and is popular for its off-piste areas with good snow conditions. This area is included in your Hochkönig ski pass, but a different (and cheaper) ski pass is also available for just this area.

Königstour

Skiing like a king

The Königstour in the Hochkönig ski area is one of the most impressive ski tours in the Alps, with stunning alpine panoramas and breathtaking views of the Hochkönig and the Steinernes Meer.

The tour begins in Mühlbach am Hochkönig (5 minutes from the chalet). Via six mountain peaks, 35 km of uninterrupted slopes, and a 7,500 m vertical drop, you'll ski to the picturesque Maria Alm on the other side of the Hochkönig massif.

After a well-deserved rest and a delicious snack, you'll ski back to Mühlbach via the same route.

Ski Amadé

For those who want more

Fancy a day of skiing somewhere different? It's possible! The Hochkönig is part of Ski Amadé, the second-largest ski area in Europe. With a total of 760km of slopes, the Hochkönig, Gasteinertal, Salzburger Sportwelt, Schladming-Dachtstein, and Grossarltal areas make a fantastic base. With just one ski pass, you can hit the slopes in all these areas.

And for true winter sports enthusiasts, the fun never ends: the Hochkönig area is part of Salzburg Super Ski. How does 2,840km of slopes, 946 lifts, and 809 mountain huts sound? With this ski pass, you can ski in all affiliated regions in Salzburgerland, such as Kitzbühel, Saalbach-Hinterglemm, Zell am See, Kaprun, Zillertal Arena, and many more. The Salzburg Super Ski card is available as an alternative to the Hochkönig or Ski Amadé pass.

Cross-country skiing

For beginners and advanced

The Hochkönig is known for its cross-country skiing opportunities. Strap on your skis, breathe in the fresh mountain air, and enjoy the view.

Just a stone's throw from the chalet, you'll find perfectly groomed slopes for cross-country skiing. Ideal for both beginners and experienced skiers!

Looking for a real challenge? Then try the route from the Scheppalalm to the Kings Cab mountain station. This groomed route leads to a fantastic viewpoint!

Hiking

Walking in a winter wonderland

Not a fan of skiing or looking for something different for a day? Go hiking! In winter, there are numerous groomed trails crisscrossing the countryside. With or without snowshoes, the choice is yours.

The trails are generally well-marked and therefore ideal for all levels.

Tobogganing

If we had to give you just one tip, it's to go tobogganing with the whole family or friends. What a fantastic experience!

Across picturesque winter landscapes and with the Hochkönig massif in the background, you'll find a 4.5km-long, groomed toboggan run near the chalet.

Take the (free) ski bus up to Alpengasthof Kopphütte and then zip down from there to the village together.

Guaranteed laughs ;).

Sleigh

What better way to enjoy the fairytale Alpine landscape than from a horse-drawn sleigh?

Let the kids feel like princes or princesses, or take a romantic ride for two.
