Skiing
On the slopes
The Pillows & Pines Lodge is located in the Hochkönig ski area, named after the majestic 3,000-meter-high Hochkönig massif. The ski area offers 120 km of slopes for skiers of all levels, top-class snow and fun parks, and of course, numerous cozy ski huts where you can take a break and enjoy the magical scenery.

This area is perfect for families who love a mix of wide, peaceful slopes, unspoiled nature, and adventure. It is also known as a "Schneeloch" (snow hole), as it often receives plenty of snow, especially in Mühlbach.

The nearest ski lift (Karbachalmbahn) is just a 5-minute drive from the chalet, or you can take the (free) ski bus, which stops a 5-minute walk from the chalet.

There is also a smaller ski area nearby: Hochkeil (10 minutes by car or 20 minutes by ski bus). This area is great for children and beginners, but it also offers several red slopes and is popular for off-piste skiing in good snow conditions. Hochkeil is included in your Hochkönig ski pass, but a separate (and cheaper) pass is also available for just this area.

Königstour
Ski like a king
The Königstour in the Hochkönig ski area is one of the most impressive ski circuits in the Alps, offering stunning alpine panoramas and breathtaking views of the Hochkönig and the Steinernes Meer.

The tour starts in Mühlbach am Hochkönig (just 5 minutes from the chalet). You’ll ski over 6 mountain peaks, covering 35 km of uninterrupted slopes and 7,500 meters of altitude change, all the way to the picturesque Maria Alm on the other side of the Hochkönig massif.

After a well-deserved break and a delicious snack, you’ll ski back to Mühlbach along the same route.

In our opinion, this is an absolute must-do!
Ski Amadé
For those who want even more
Fancy a day of skiing somewhere else? You can! The Hochkönig is part of Ski Amadé, Europe’s second-largest ski area. With a total of 760 km of slopes, the areas of Hochkönig, Gasteinertal, Salzburger Sportwelt, Schladming-Dachstein, and Grossarltal offer an incredible variety of skiing experiences. With just one ski pass, you have access to all these areas!

And for the true winter sports enthusiasts, the fun doesn’t stop there! The Hochkönig region is also part of the Salzburg Super Ski pass. How does 2,840 km of slopes, 946 lifts, and 809 mountain huts sound? With this pass, you can ski in all connected regions in Salzburgerland, including Kitzbühel, Saalbach-Hinterglemm, Zell am See, Kaprun, Zillertal Arena, and many more.

The Salzburger Super Ski Card is available as an alternative to the Hochkönig or Ski Amadé pass.
Cross-Country Skiing
For beginners and advanced skiers
The Hochkönig is renowned for its fantastic cross-country skiing trails. Strap on your skis, breathe in the fresh mountain air, and take in the breathtaking scenery.

Just a stone’s throw from the chalet, you’ll find perfectly groomed cross-country trails, ideal for both beginners and experienced skiers!

Looking for a real challenge? Try the route from Scheppalalm to the Kings Cab mountain station—a groomed trail leading to a stunning panoramic viewpoint!
Hiking
Walking in a winter wonderland
Not a fan of skiing or just looking for a different activity? Go for a winter hike! In winter, there are numerous groomed hiking trails that lead you right through the beautiful nature of Hochkönig. With or without snowshoes, the choice is yours!

The trails are well-marked and suitable for all levels, making winter hiking a perfect alternative or complement to skiing.
Tobogganing
family fun
If we had to give just one recommendation, it would definitely be tobogganing with the whole family or a group of friends. It’s an unforgettable experience!

Surrounded by picturesque winter landscapes and with the Hochkönig massif as a backdrop, you’ll find a 4.5 km long, groomed toboggan run just a short distance from the chalet.

Take the (free) ski bus up to Alpengasthof Kopphütte and race down together towards the village.

Laughter guaranteed! ;).
Horse-drawn Sleigh Ride
In a one horse open sleigh🎵
What better way to enjoy the fairy-tale Alpine landscape than from a horse-drawn sleigh?

Let the kids feel like real princes and princesses, or enjoy a romantic ride for two.
